Recycling & Composting

The following details the building’s recycling and trash program:

  • Blue Containers: To be used only for the approved recyclables (listed below).
  • Brown Containers: To be used for Trash/Landfill Products (listed below). It is recommended that these bins are only kept in kitchens, conference rooms and high traffic areas. These containers are lined with trash liners.
  • The nighttime janitorial cleaners will collect the contents of the recycling in clear liners and food waste in larger brown liners. Due to safety and health concerns, the cleaners will not sort the contents of either the blue recycling bins or the brown trash bins.
  • In the Basement Trash Room, the brown bags are placed in the brown dumpsters and the clear bags are placed in the blue dumpsters.


Recyclable Items (Contains no liquid and little food residue):


  • Plastics numbered 1-7 (no PLA)
  • Empty soda, juice and water bottles
  • Empty milk and water jugs
  • Empty detergent jugs
  • Plastic containers
  • Plastic toys, crates. Gardening trays etc
  • Plastic bags, dry cleaning bags and clean cellophane
  • Foam (Must be clean, dry and not used for food)


  • Aluminum foil and clean pie tins
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Scrap metal
  • Steel cans, dishware etc
  • Empty and clean tin and aluminum cans

Paper (clean and dry):

  • Aseptic drink and box soup container
  • Egg cartons (paper only and clean)
  • Envelopes
  • File folders (paper only)
  • Junk mail
  • Magazines
  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Newspaper
  • Paper (white and mixed color)
  • Paper grocery bags
  • Telephone books

Cardboard (or similar):

  • Cardboard and corrugated boxes
  • Empty cereal boxes
  • Frozen food boxes
  • Pizza boxes (clean parts only)

Glass (No window glass, porcelain, or non-food related glass):

  • Amber, green and mixed color glass
  • Empty Clear food glass jars
  • Empty soda, tea and liquor bottles

  • Candy and protein bar wrapper
  • Chip bags
  • Disposal coffee cup and lid
  • Juice pouch
  • Bags with mix of metal and plastic


  • Dishware
  • Flower pots
  • Incandescent light bulbs

  • Window glass


  • Bathroom and facial tissue
  • Gift wrap with plastic or metal
  • Hardback books
  • Laminated or plastic coated paper
  • Padded or Tyvec-type envelopes
  • Photographs


  • Garden hoses and plastic tarps
  • Bubble wrap


  • Disposable diapers
  • Pet waste
  • Unusable clothing and fabric

Organics and Soiled Paper:

  • Includes all food scraps, green waste and food soiled paper
